Meet the New Executive Director for Calvary Refuge Center

Meet our New Executive Director, Keisha Zimmerman

In the late 1990s, I was pursuing a career in the beauty industry and proudly earned my Master Cosmetology license in December 1999. Just a few months later, in February 2000, my life took an unexpected turn when I lost my eyesight due to a condition called pseudotumor cerebri.
While in the hospital, I found myself asking the Lord what His plan was for my life. He reminded me of something that had always been a part of who I am—my love for helping others. Even as a child, I was known for stopping to check on elders in my community on my way home from school, even if it sometimes got me into trouble! After my release from the hospital and as my vision slowly began to return, I decided to walk boldly into God’s purpose for me.

In the fall of 2001, I enrolled at Clayton State University and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Human Services. While in school, I began working part-time at Securus House, a domestic violence shelter in Clayton County. That role reignited my confidence and passion, and within nine months, I was promoted to full-time Shelter Case Manager—a role I held for over four years.

In 2009, I was honored to join the Calvary Refuge Center team as the Transitional Housing Program Manager. I continued my academic journey, earning a Master’s in Criminal Justice from Troy University and later a Master’s in Nonprofit Leadership from Southern New Hampshire University.

In December 2023, I stepped into the role of Interim Executive Director at Calvary Refuge Center, and in November 2024, I officially became the Executive Director.

As someone who is visually impaired, I won’t pretend that the path has been easy—but it has been purposeful. Losing my vision gave me a new perspective, not just on life, but on the immense value of every person and every sense we often take for granted. If not for that season of hardship, I may never have discovered the joy of being the hands and feet of God—serving others, uplifting the unhoused community, and leading a mission that is changing lives every single day.

Thank you for walking alongside us. I am truly grateful for your unwavering support and partnership. Together, we are building something powerful at Calvary Refuge Center—a place of hope, healing, and new beginnings for those experiencing homelessness. Your continued encouragement and generosity, especially during these challenging times, inspire us daily. It is an honor to serve, and I look forward to all that we will continue to accomplish together in support of our unhoused neighbors.
